In a region of cowbells, magnificent mountains, and babbling brooks, the Hotel Chalavaina in Val Müstair, Switzerland offers a journey through time. As part of Switzerland's heritage, it has been named a monument.

Idyllic Val Müstair, one of the few areas in Switzerland where Romansch is spoken, is between the Italian border and alpine passes that lead to the heart of Switzerland.

It was here at what is now known as Hotel Chalavaina that orders were given for the famous Swiss Battle of Calven. (Chalavaina is Romansch for Calven). The two crossed swords of Hotel Chalavaina's sign commemorate the military victory that led to Swiss independence.
